My son had wanted a dog almost from the day he was born. Like I said, I was a dedicated cat person, and really had no intention of getting a dog.
Luckily for him, (and the rest of the house) my brother-in-law had a dachshund he didn’t want and passed on to me. Rambo and my son have been best buddies ever since, even now that my son is all grown up.
